That’s why a Calgary company is getting a lot of attention with its high-tech mushroom production facility. It’s one of a handful of Canadian businesses that are federally approved to grow psilocybin for research and clinical use. The company, called Optimi Health, has been working with researchers to develop and test the drug’s potential benefits.

The company recently announced that it had partnered with a Calgary-based clinic group to supply them with magic mushrooms for psychedelic-assisted therapy (SAP). Patients undergoing SAP are approved by a psychiatrist and undergo extensive safety measures. The partnership will produce about 2,000 kilograms of dried mushrooms each month.

Even though a few growers are legally authorized by Health Canada to sell magic mushrooms, most people who offer them for sale online or at brick-and-mortar stores are not. That’s because psilocybin is a Schedule 1 drug and possession of it is illegal. Possession of spores that don’t contain the drug is legal. However, growing psilocybin-containing mushrooms without a Health Canada exemption could land you in jail for up to 10 years. That’s why Harder says it’s important to know your supplier.
